Why cigarette smell lasts so long
Cigarette smoke is not just a smell. It carries tar and nicotine, both sticky, onto every surface — especially porous materials: curtains, carpet, mattresses, pillows, sofas, ceiling panels and wallpaper.
These residues release slowly over months or years, which is why you can leave the windows open all day and the smell is back as soon as the room is closed up.
The part people forget is the air-conditioning
Smoke is drawn into the cooling coil and ductwork and settles there. The next time the unit runs, the smell is blown back through the whole room.
This is why people wash the curtains, replace the carpet and repaint everything, and the smell still arrives the moment the air comes on.
What people usually try first, and what it actually achieves
- Air freshener — covers it for a few hours. Once it fades the original smell is back at full strength, and sometimes the fragrance mixed with smoke is worse than before.
- Activated charcoal and vinegar — help a little with smell in the air, but never reach what is in the fibres.
- Air purifiers — filter the air that passes through them, but do nothing about smell embedded in fabric and walls.
- Painting over it — seals the smell from the walls for a while, but does nothing for curtains, carpet or the air-conditioning.
Why ozone is different
Ozone is a gas, so it reaches anywhere air reaches — into curtain fibres, mattress filling, air ducts and above the ceiling, which is where the smell actually sits — and breaks the odour molecules down right there.
When the job is finished the gas reverts to oxygen. No residue to wipe off, no re-washing of fabrics, and no chemical smell left in its place.
Important: treatment at the concentrations used for odour removal must be carried out in a room with no people, pets or plants present, and the space must be ventilated for the specified time before anyone returns. Do not attempt it yourself without measuring equipment and timer control.
Preparing the room before treatment
- Leave wardrobes, drawers and the bathroom door open so the gas reaches every gap
- Take off bedcovers and pillowcases and spread them out — no need to wash them
- Move fresh food, medicines and plants out of the room
- Close the windows fully during treatment, then ventilate for the time the team specifies
How long does it take?
It depends on the size of the room and how strong the smell is. A normal condo unit that has been smoked in for years is usually finished within a day, ventilation included — nothing has to be moved out, and the unit is not closed for a week the way it would be for repainting.
